Ever since Pixar’s superhero animation The Incredibles, written and directed by Brad Bird, was released back in 2004, people have been clambering for a sequel, certainly a lot more than certain other sequels the animation maestros have made in the interim (*cough* Cars 2! *cough*).
The studio announced The Incredibles 2 last Spring, with original director Bird working on the story. And now it looks like it may very well be his next directorial project. In an interview with Collider, Bird was asked about the status of the superhero sequel:
Oh yeah I have pages, a bunch of pages. I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like. I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie. I’m just focusing on getting Tomorrowland out into the world and playing with the Incredibles sandbox again.
And when asked about the all-important detail of whether it will be his next film, Bird replied with a straightforward, “Yeah it feels like it to me, yeah.” Now that doesn’t categorically mean it WILL definitely be next on the agenda for him but it’s as close as we’re going to get without an officially announcement from the studio.
The first Incredibles remains one of the best superhero movies of the century thus far, animated or otherwise, and quite frankly I’m surprised we haven’t had a followup long before now. Hopefully the time apart will mean the quality will be high and it isn’t a rush job. The space between films could also be box office gold because, as they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder.
While we wait for Bird to get fully working on actually making The Incredibles 2, we have his latest live-action blockbuster, Tomorrowland, to enjoy when it hits cinemas on May 22nd.
