If you were a betting (wo)man, who would you put your money on: Horrible Bosses star Charlie Day or the legendary Ice Cube? Well, I guess we’ll find out who would win as they’re set to star in a new fisticuffs comedy for New Line Cinema.
Deadline reports that Day and Ice Cube are in early talks to star in Fist Fight, what sounds like a good old fashioned broad comedy from writers Van Robichaux and Evan Susser. Neither have written any big-screen projects before, having only done talk show series What’s Going On? with Mike Mitchell and short films like The Zombie Solution.
The comedy is said to be in the vein of the cult ’80s film Three O’Clock High, which was about a nerdy school kid who gets challenged to a fight at the end of the day with the resident bully. In Fist Fight, Day is set to play a mild-mannered English teacher who is put to the test when his more abrasive colleague (Ice Cube) – who thinks he’s trying to get him fired – challenges him to a punch-up after school.
It’s hard to know what to make of the project at this early stage but Day and Ice Cube are certainly funny guys; the former is hilarious in TV’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia as well as on the big-screen in the Horrible Bosses movies, while Ice Cube has proven his comedic talents recently in the Jump Street movies.
Day will next be seen in in franchise revamp Vacation, while Ice Cube has sequels Ride Along 2 and Barbershop 3 on his filmography (he’s also a producer on the upcoming N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton).
Fist Fight is currently on the lookout for a director ahead of a planned September shooting start.
