She’s about to blow audiences away with her performance as the badass heroin Imperator Furiosa in the stunning Mad Max: Fury Road. Now Charlize Theron is set to turn super spy in a new thriller entitled The Coldest City.
Deadline reports the news in advance of the Cannes Film Festival that Focus Features has nabbed the North American rights to the spy thriller for an unspecified eight-figure deal and the Oscar-winning actress is set to star in the lead role as well as producing the film.
Based on the graphic novel by Antony Johnson, the plot is as follows:
Theron plays a super spy who springs into action after an underground MI6 officer is killed just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. She must find a list he was smuggling into the West to protect herself and the counter intelligence community. It becomes a game of double-crossing as agents play out global agendas.
Rather excitingly, the film will be directed by John Wick directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski. It was recently announced that the duo – who have also done second unit work on the upcoming Jurassic World and Captain America: Civil War – are working on a John Wick sequel but this will be on their agenda after that. The script is written by Kurt Johnstad, who wrote 300, Act of Valour and the upcoming Aquaman.
Before we see her suit-up as the super spy in The Coldest City, you can see Theron kicking all sorts of ass in Mad Max: Fury Road when it’s released on May 14th.
