Well, this is a funny bit of off-kilter casting news.
Spy director Paul Feig has Tweeted a surprising bit of casting for her upcoming female-led Ghostbusters reboot in the form of Thor himself Chris Hemsworth. We don’t know much about the casting, at least from the horse’s mouth, as Feig only mentions he’ll be playing their receptionist.
Of course it’s speculation at this point but we assume this means he’ll be playing a male version of the receptionist character of Janine Melnitz played by Annie Potts in the original film and its sequel. However, Deadline has sources saying he’s, “the assistant to the band of ghostbusting gals who nobody wants to work with.” Now the Aussie isn’t exactly lacking in the looks department so does that mean he’ll be channeling his Thor-esque arrogance that leads him to being repellant in the workplace?
We’ll find out exactly how he fits into the new version in due course but he joins an impressive cast that includes Melissa McCarthy, Kristin Wiig (both reuniting with their Bridesmaids director Paul Feig), Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. It’s said to follow its own path as opposed to slavishly remaking the classic original.
Hemsworth will next be seen in another comedic role in the Vacation reboot.
Ghostbusters is set to start shooting this year for a July 22nd, 2016 release.
