A couple of weeks ago we reported on the news that The Theory of Everything Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne was in talks for the lead role in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, an adaptation of Harry Potter companion “textbook” by J.K. Rowling.
At the time there were several key female roles but without actresses to fill them. Well now it appears that just about every young, up-and-coming female star in Hollywood is circling the project.
The Wrap has the scoop that Warner Bros. and HP director David Yates are honing in on their choices for the crucial female roles. They include: Saoirse Ronan, Dakota Fanning, Lili Simmons (TV’s Banshee) and Alison Sudol (TV’s Transparent), who are all up for the role of Tina. Kate Upton, Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) and Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.) are possibilities for the role of Tina’s older sister, Queenie.
Nothing is for definite yet as schedules are still being worked out but with Redmayne set as the lead, he will be reading with many of them over the next week. Last time we reported there were also two American boy roles mentioned, so expect casting shortlists for those roles to appears soon, too.
Fantastic Beasts, which will be J.K. Rowling’s foray into feature film screenwriting, is purportedly going to be set some 70 years prior to Philosopher’s Stone, set in New York and follow Redmayne’s Newt Scamander, a “magiczoologist” and author of the eponymous book that chronicles the various weird and wonderful creatures found in the Potterverse. It’s not meant to be taken as a sequel/prequel etc. to Potter but merely an expansion of the much-loved wizarding world.
We’ll make sure to keep you up-to-date on which actresses end up landing the coveted roles.
Planned to be the first of a franchise trilogy, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set for a November 18th, 2016 release.
