Following on from its successes with live action fantasy movies Maleficent and Cinderella, Disney is bringing another piece of its animated fairytale history to live action life.
THR reports that Disney is planning a live action feature adaptation of Night On Bald Mountain, one of the sequences found in its resplendent 1940 animated classic Fantasia. The sequence – which featured famous music by composter Modest Mussorgsky – centres around a winged creature who raises spirits from the dead who then dance and fly through the air before fading away once the sun comes up.
Things are still in the early stages of development but Matt Sazam and Burk Shapless – who have worked together on Dracula Untold and the upcoming Gods of Egypt and The Last Witch Hunter – have been tasked with writing the script.
Unsurprisingly it’s being planned to follow in footsteps similar to Maleficent, which was one of the big hits of last year grossing a whopping $758 million worldwide. Whether it repeats that film’s success seems unlikely at this point but you never know these days what will catch on with audiences in a big way.
This news follows the studio announcing plans for a live action Tinkerbell movie to star Reese Witherspoon, and joins other in-development projects like Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland sequel Through the Looking Glass and The Jungle Book.
