With her directorial debut Pitch Perfect 2, Elizabeth Banks delivered what is the highest grossing musical comedy film ever and the second highest grossing debut for a female director. And the talented actress-turned-director certainly isn’t leaving things there.
THR reports that Banks is in talks to direct a young adult fantasy adaptation entitled Red Queen for Universal. It’s in the early stages of development at the moment and might not be her exact next project but it certainly would represent a diversion in terms of budget, scale and genre.
Based on the book by Victoria Aveyard, the YA fantasy is set in a futuristic world in which people are divided by blood colour; regular red are “normal” people and silver for those “elites” with supernatural abilities.
When a street urchin saves her best friend, she is brought before the king and queen, where she suddenly displays special powers — powers impossible for a red blood. To hide this startling news and to keep her under control, the king invents a past for the young woman as a lost princess and sets her up to marry one of his sons. But the woman soon finds herself conflicted as she becomes part of the silver world while at the same time aiding a group plotting a red rebellion.
For obvious reasons, the adaptation is being described as having strong shades of The Hunger Games and X-Men, but comparisons to Cinderella and even Game of Thrones are thrown into the mix, too. It also reminds me of the time-themed thriller In Time and YA fantasy The Host starring Saoirse Ronan.
Gennifer Hutchison wrote the script for the adaptation – she’s a critically acclaimed TV writer, having worked on the likes of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and The Strain, as well doing producing work on The X Files and Mad Men. Jake Weiner (The Incredible Burt Wonderstone), Chris Bender (Horrible Bosses 2), JC Spink (Arthur), Pouya Shahbazian (Divergent) and Christopher Cosmos (Arthur) are all producing in various capacities.
Banks will next be seen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, out on November 19th this year.
