A couple of weeks ago we reported on the news that Tate Taylor, who made the Oscar-winning The Help, had signed on to direct an adaptation of the best-selling Paula Hawkins novel The Girl on the Train. Now we have word that the project may have found its leading lady.
The Wrap reports that Emily Blunt is in talks to for the lead role in the mystery thriller adaptation. She would play Rachel, a lonely and alcoholic divorcee who, “fantasizes during her daily commute about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day, until she sees something shocking happen there one morning and becomes entangled in the mystery that unfolds.”
In addition to Blunt’s involvement, it’s also noted that DreamWorks has expressed interest in Kate Mara for one of two other crucial female roles. It’s clearly a hot project at the moment, not least because it’s actually the fastest-selling novel EVER, shifting 2 million copies in the U.S. since its January publication alone.
Blunt is one of the best and most sought-after British actresses working today, impressing most recently in the likes of the sadly under-performing but critically acclaimed blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow, as well as fantasy musical Into the Woods, each showing off a different aspect of her acting talents. This project sounds like it might give her a really strong female role which she can really sink her teeth into; could we be looking at another case of the road Rosamund Pike ended up walking down with Gone Girl?
Blunt will next be seen in crime mystery Sicario, due for release on September 25th, and is currently working on fantasy sequel The Huntsman alongside Chris Hemsworth.
