Back in April we reported on the big news that Sony was moving ahead not only a surprising crossover with the Men In Black franchise but also that they’re planning a female-driven spinoff. Now we’ve got the news on who is going to be behind the script for it.
THR reports that Sony has hired sisters and writing partners Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux, who write for the popular FOX animated comedy Bob’s Burger, to pen the script for the female-centric Jump Street movie. They follow on from the already hired Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs, who are most known for their work on Comedy Central’s Broad City.
Interestingly rather than the foursome writing the same script together, the studio is letting the seperate duos come up with scripts of their own and then, presumably, they’ll see which one they like best down the right. Perhaps they can combine it into some sort of super script if the two groups come up with equally funny ideas(?).
Along with Bob’s Burgers, the Molyneux sister have also written a script for DreamWorks animation Hot Stuff and their comedy script My Sister Married a Douchebag landed on the coveted “Black List” of best unproduced Hollywood scripts back in 2009. Wendy also appeared in the news as of late when she started a crowdsourcing campaign that would see her force herself to watch the Entourage movie (she loathes the TV series) if it got to $10,000.
Female-led comedy movies and TV shows are booming these days, with everything from The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix to this summer’s excellent Spy showing there’s an appetite. This new Jump Street project follows on from the high profile new version of Ghostbusters, which is set to star the foursome of Kristin Wiig, Melissa McCarthy (reuniting them with their Bridesmaids director Paul Feig), Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.
