Some of you may fondly remember, some of you may not even know what it is, but we’re getting a live-action version of ’80s cartoon Jem (AKA Jem and the Holograms) and today we have the first trailer for it.
The original cartoon followed Jessica Benton, the owner of a record label called Starlight Music who morphs into the titular popstar (ala Miley Cyrus into Hannah Montana) with the help of a holographic computer that her father built.
Is this cause for excitement for the fans? Er, probably not, because apart from the basic double-identity premise, the movie appears to change everything else about the idea, doing away with the more sci-fi holographic computer aspect and instead making it that her sister uploads a video of her performing an acoustic version of one of her songs onto YouTube, leading to Justin Bieber-esque superstardom. They’ve also changed her appearance quite dramatically.
The reactions on Twitter pretty vitriolic when it first appeared online, with some branding it as outright terrible. Be careful what you do to people’s beloeved childhood favourites, Holywood…

Jem and the Holograms stars Aubrey Peoples (TV’s Nashville), Juliette Lewis, Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko and Molly Ringwald. It’s set for release on December 26th this year.
