From low-budget horror maestro to directing one of the biggest movies of all time, James Wan sure has been making some big strides in Hollywood as of late. And it looks like he’s adding another massive string to his bow.
Warner Bros has officially announced that Wan – who most recently directed the almost $1.5 billion-grossing Fast & Furious 7 – has signed on to direct Warner Bros. upcoming DC comic book adaptation Aquaman, which has Jason Momoa set to play the title character. Wan has been linked to the project for a while but this confirms it.
Zach and Deborah Snyder are producing the big-budget movie alongside Charles Roven, and the script will be written by Kurt Johnstad (co-writer of action epic 300 and it sequel). For those who don’t know, Aquaman is DC’s underwater hero, known as the King of the Seven Seas, “this reluctant ruler of Atlantis, caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt, is committed to protecting the entire globe.”
Wan is one in-demand director at the moment. Not only did he deliver Fast & Furious 7, which is less than $20 million away from becoming the third highest grossing movie OF ALL TIME, but has successfully kicked off a number of franchises including Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring (he’s set to start shooting the sequel to the latter soon, with a Halloween 2016 release date set).
He was recently announced to be directing a live action Robotech movie but it seems Aquaman will now take priority. He will direct the DC superhero movie for a July 27th, 2018 release date, and move onto Robotech thereafter. He’s also been linked to Malignant Man, an adaptation of a graphic novel he wrote a few years ago, but that will probably be away down the line in the wake of this announcement.
What do you think of Wan directing Aquaman? Is he a good fit?
