Despite the sequel to the 2013 magic-themed mystery thriller Now You See Me not even being in cinemas yet, Variety reports that studio already has a third film in the early stages of development.
In keeping with pretty much every other studio out there, Lionsgate is putting a lot of focus on creating more franchises, following on from the likes of The Hunger Games and Twilight running their course, and Now You See Me 3 is just part of that. It’s not quite at the level of Marvel, which plans ahead more than most, but this sequel has been announced more than a year before the second one even hits cinemas. The studio also recently announced plans for John Wick 2.
The first Now You See Me focused on a group of expert expert magicians who pull off bank heists and other crimes during their performances, leading to an FBI agent and an Interpol detective trying to catch them. Despite mixed reviews, it made a whopping $350 million at the worldwide box office from a $75 million budget.
The continued star power, name recognition and the prospect of more magical twists and turns is hoped by Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer to help it top the box office success of the last one.
Most of the cast are returning for Now You See Me: The Second Act, including Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo, Dave Franco, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine, although due to her pregnancy there’s no Isla Fisher; Lizzy Caplan is the main female presence this time. A big surprise in the cast is the addition of Daniel Radcliffe, so that should help its box office prospects even further. Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Jem and the Holograms) is directing and the script is written by Ed Solomon and Pete Chiarelli.
Now You See Me: The Second Act is set for release on Jun 10th, 2016. We can probably assume The Third Act to follow a year later or so.
