Despite it, ya know, not being very good (that’s putting it mildly), the supernatural horror film Ouija was a big success at the box office, making a whopping $100 million on a $5 million budget. Never underestimate the power of safe, accessible horror, folks!
So with the film’s success it was pretty much inevitable that a sequel was on the way and now it’s been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that Universal has hired Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard to write the script. The duo made people sit up and take notice when they wrote last year’s brilliant little flashback supernatural horror Oculus, starring Karen Gillan.
The Ouija sequel will once again be produced by Michael Bay, Bradley Fuller and Andrew Form through their Platinum Dunes company – in case you don’t know, they’re the ones responsible for all those lacklustre 21st century horror remakes like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th – as well as Jason Blum at Blumhouse Productions and Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis from Hasbro (lest we forget a Ouija board is a Hasbro toy!).
As I said, the first Ouija was rubbish and utterly forgettable but the fact that it’s the Oculus writers behind the script this time gives me hope that it will turn out well.
Ouija 2 is now set for a October 21st, 2016 release.
