A couple of weeks ago we reported on the news that the upcoming Magnificent Seven remake continued to add great actors to its already bulging cast, namely Jason Momoa and Byung-hun Lee. Now we’re hearing word of a bit of a change up in the cast.
Firstly, the brilliant Peter Sarsgaard has joined the project as the film’s primary outlaw villain, playing a character called Bartholomew Brogue whose men kill the husband of a woman who then hires a group of mercenaries to take back the village from him.
Secondly, in a case of “one in, one out” it appears that the recently announced Momoa has left the project, with rumors flying around that his character just didn’t have enough to say or do for the actor’s liking (although take that with a pinch of salt for the time being). It’s not a case of Sarsgaard replacing Momoa at all as the latter was set to play a different character, presumably one of the hero mercenaries. I don’t think he’ll be hurting too much from the departure, though, as he’s set to play Aquaman in DC’s upcoming comic book adaptation.
The new Magnificent Seven movie is being directed by Antoine Fuqua, most famous for Training Day but also has the likes of King Arthur, Shooter, Olympus Has Fallen and last year’s The Equalizer in his filmography. It’s got some serious writing talent behind the script including True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto and Saving Mr. Banks’ John Lee Hancock.
In addition to Sarsgaard, the stacked cast also includes Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vince D’Onofrio, Matt Bomer, Byung-hun Lee, Wagner Moura and Hayley Bennett. The film is set to start shooting this May with a release date currently set at January 13th, 2017.
