Aca-mazing!
It should come as no surprise to anyone considering the massive success of the sequel but it’s great to have the official word: we’re getting Pitch Perfect 3.
THR reports that Universal and Gold Circle are moving full steam ahead with another Pitch Perfect movie and have already tapped Kay Cannon to write the script for it. She wrote the first two movies so it makes sense to have her again to give it that consistent voice and sense of tone. It’s unclear at the moment whether Elizabeth Banks, who made her directorial debut with the second film, will return to direct.
The tricky part is certainly not audience appetite for more a capella synchronization – Pitch Perfect 2 has made a whopping $250 million worldwide (and counting) from a modest $29 million budget – but rather how you work out a story to bring back together Anna Kendrick, fan-favourite Rebel Wilson and the rest of the Barden Bellas who [PITCH PERFECT 2 SPOILER ALERT!] mostly all graduated last time.
They made the now even more fortuitous choice of bringing in Hailee Steinfeld’s freshman character so perhaps she’ll be the leader and it will just be visiting appearances from Kendrick and Wilson? Either way the studio is probably looking at having to hand over hefty paychecks since those two got $2 million a piece for doing the first sequel; deals were not in place for them to return. [END OF PITCH PERFECT 2 SPOILERS!]
It’s still at the early stages and if anyone will figure out an excuse a way for the Bellas to get back together to make more music from their mouths then it’s the writer who brought it to life in the first place.
