Zorro is set to reboot in a post-apocalyptic world, Yahoo reported today.

A partnership between Lantica Media and Sobini Films has led to the project finding a new life. Lantica, Antonio Gennari’s production/financing company, will finance with veteran film producer and Sobini Films CEO Mark Amin. Pantelion Films are slated to handle international sales which is due to begin at the Toronto Film Festival this month.

Zorro Reborn is a unique take on the Zorro character, placing him in the near future battling tyrants as opposed to the traditional role as a hero of the poor people of Spanish-held California, as portrayed in the previous two movies that starred Antonio Banderas as the masked hero.

The project has had a turbulent past, with 20th Century Fox looking to produce it with Bryan Singer, Garry Whitta and Justin Marks all involved at numerous points over the years. A search to find a filmmaker to helm the project is underway.

“This has been a 15 year journey filled with ups and downs but it has remained my passion project over the years,” said Amin. “Every generation has its own Zorro hero and we’re proud to be able to introduce a new Zorro to this generation,” added Gennari.

Principal photography is due to start March 2016.
