The remakes just keep on coming…
Just after it was announced that Disney is planning a live action adaptation of the Fantasia sequence Night On Bald Mountain, it’s being reported that the studio is planning a remake of classic nun musical comedy Sister Act.
Variety reports the news of the Sister Act updating, which has Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah aboard to write the script. They’re a veteran of feel-good movies, having written between them the likes of 10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde and The House Bunny, among others. Cinderella producer Allison Shearmur is also on-board the project.
It should be explicitly noted that Whoopi Goldberg has got nothing to do with the remake, at least for the time being (I don’t think a cameo is out of the question), so it looks like it’s case of trying to find an actress with the same charisma and comedic timing as the incomparable, Oscar-winning comedienne; good luck with that, Disney!
The original Sister Act was a huge hit for all involved, grossing $232 million worldwide and although it’s sequel, the hilariously subtitled Back in the Habit, didn’t make anywhere near that, it still made a respectable $100 million worldwide. The franchise also spawned a massively successful stage musical, which has been nominated for Tony and Laurence Oliver Awards.
It’s easy to dismiss something like this out of hand but let’s give it a chance before we stomp all over the idea. If they get a talented director who understands how to meld together good-natured comedy and jovial musical, it could provide something worthwhile.
