It’s been a tough old road to get here, with a whole other Bourne-less Legacy movie in between, but now things are finally moving forward with the fifth film in the long-running action franchise.
Matt Damon is returning to the role for which he is most famous, with Julia Stiles also returning and woman-of-the-moment Alicia Vikander being brought into the fold (it would be quicker to rhyme off the movies Vikander ISN’T in these days!). And now they’ve added one of the best veteran actors still working today: Tommy Lee Jones.
Although specific plot details are being kept firmly under wraps for the time being – understandable considering we’re exactly a year away to the day from the film being released – it’s strongly rumoured that Jones will be playing a tough superior CIA officer; no surprise there! Prepare for more gruffness and long, disapproving stares. He’ll be stepping into the sort of Bourne role previously played by the likes of Brian Cox, David Strathairn, Chris Cooper and Edward Norton.
Fans of the franchise will be happy to hear that Paul Greengrass is returning to the direct the as-yet-untitled fifth film, with Christopher Rouse writing the script; this is his debut screenplay. It marks the first time that a Bourne script hasn’t at least been co-written by Tony Gilroy but Rouse clearly knows the franchise inside out since he edited Supremacy and Ultimatum. He’s Greengrass’ go-to editor, in fact, having also worked with him on Captain Phillips, Green Zone and United 93.
Shooting on the next Bourne is expected to start next month, with a release date set for July 29th, 2016. Jones will next be seen in thriller Criminal, opposite Kevin Costner.
