Whiplash wunderkind Damien Chazelle has lined up Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone to star in his next film, La La Land’. Emma Watson, Miles Teller and Eddie Redmayne were linked at one point.
Described as a contemporary riff on the Hollywood musical, Gosling and Stone will play Sebestatian and Mia, two (presumably) beautiful people drawn together into a love affair before tough decisions and broken dreams threaten to tear them apart. Here’s a taster of what else we can expect from the movie, via Chazelle’s La La Land “lookbook” (read the rest over at The Wrap has obtained):
I’d like to make a contemporary musical about L.A., starting with the L.A. we know but slowly building to a vision of the city as romantic metropolis–one that is actually worthy of the dreams it inspires. I’d like to make a musical about the way L.A.’s peculiar rhythms can push its residents to the edge of their emotions–be they hope, desperation or love. Think the kind of teetering-toward-madness you see in “The Graduate” or “Boogie Nights”, and imagine if you were to push that further. In this case, the city pushes its residents all the way: it pushes them into song.
The film will mark the third team-up between the two actors and they’ll be hoping to build on the chemistry they displayed in Crazy, Stupid, Love rather than that on show in the less-loved Gangster Squad.
