Good news for fans of cult director Eli Roth as it looks like his long-delayed gory cannibal horror The Green Inferno is finally getting the release it deserves, with word coming straight from the director himself via a video he posted on Facebook.
The film, which follows a group of student activists who visit a remote part of the Amazon jungle only to be captured by a cannibalistic tribe, was supposed to be released in U.S. theatres on September 5th 2014 but it was suddenly pulled from the schedule because of financial difficulties suffered by Open Road Films’ production company Worldview Entertainment.
Now thanks to Blumhouse Productions (the folks behind the likes of Insidious, Paranormal Activity and The Conjuring) label BH Tilt, Universal Pictures and High Top Releasing, the film will be released on September 25th this year on a respectable 1,000 screens.
I was lucky enough to see The Green Inferno at last year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival (you can read our full review here) and while I never believed for a minute that it would be a big wide release – it’s much too explicit and controversial for that, with the first cannibalistic sequence being one of the goriest things I’ve ever seen in a film – I didn’t see it taking more than a year for it to finally take its theatrical bow.
It should be noted that the Sep. 25th date appears to be for the U.S. only, with no word on a UK date yet. We’ll be sure to keep you informed.
