Proving that sci-fi sometimes run in the family, Sir Ridley Scott’s son Luke Scott is gearing up his directorial debut Morgan, a sci-fi thriller about a corporate risk-management consultant who is summoned to a remote research lab to determine whether or not to terminate a genetically-engineered being.
Kate Mara and Anya Taylor-Joy (reuniting after Sundance hit The Witch) were already announced last month but now we’ve got word from The Hollywood Reporter that a few more names are being added to the cast: Paul Giamatti, Toby Jones and rising star Boyd Holbrook. Giamatti will play a psychologist at the facility who has trouble relating to other people, Jones will be the chief scientist and Holbrook will play one of the facility’s nutritionists. Ridley is producing.
Giamatti and Jones are two of the best character actors around, two of those actors who just make everything they’re in better by their sheer presence, whether it’s blockbusters like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 or Captain America: The First Avenger or intimate films like Win Win or Berberian Sound Studio. You might not be familiar with Holbrook’s name but you probably have seen him in recent crime thrillers like A Walk Among the Tombstones, Run All Night and David Fincher’s hit Gone Girl.
The plot sounds like an intriguing bit of sci-fi and the newly announced cast only gives weight to the project. And here’s hoping the directorial talent doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Morgan doesn’t have a release date yet but we’ll update when it does.
