The lead-up to the Cannes Film Festival, where many movie project rights are sold to studios and distributors, is always a great time for finding out what big actors are going to be working on in the future. The latest is an intriguing new project to which Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway is now attached.
THR reports that Hathaway is set to star in Colossal, which is intriguingly being described as “Godzilla meets Lost In Translation.” Erm, okay…
Hathaway will play Gloria, an ordinary woman who, after losing her job and her fiancé, decides to leave her life in New York to move back to her hometown. But when news reports surface that a giant lizard is destroying the city of Tokyo, Gloria gradually comes to realize that she is strangely connected to these far-off events via the power of her mind. In order to prevent further destruction, Gloria needs to determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.
I gotta’ say I am loving the sound of this one, not just because of that very bold plot (in addition to Godzilla it also gives off Cloverfield vibes) but also that it’s being written and directed by the vary talented Nacho Vigalondo, who made the mind-melting Spanish-language Timecrimes, for my money one of the best time travel movies ever made. Vigalondo said that, “Colossal is my most ambitious script so far, and probably also the most personal one. Having Anne and this terrific team around goes beyond my craziest expectations.”
The project is being financed by Voltage Pictures, who are also behind another Cannes-seller The Worst Marriage in Georgetown, the directorial debut of Christopher Waltz.
Hathaway dipped her toe into the fantastical blockbuster arena recently with last year’s Interstellar and this one, while it doesn’t sound anywhere near as big in scope as Christopher Nolan’s epic, has the potential see her surrounded by amazing visual effects which she grounds with emotion.
