Update: Deadline reports that SNL star Neil Casey has been cast as the film’s main villain.
It went from an idea on how to reboot it for a new generation to getting news updates about it every other day and latest word we have on the female-centric Ghostbusters reboot is some very talented actors being added to the cast.
The Wrap reports that Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Spy) has added the legendary Andy Garcia to the last cast alongside Michael K. Williams (AKA Omar from The Wire and Chalky White from Boardwalk Empire). Garcia will play the Mayor of New York, while Williams will play a character named Hawkins, although it’s unclear what the nature of his role will be. Both are known for their quite serious personas but perhaps them playing it totally straight-faced will only make the film funnier (let’s hope Garcia doesn’t just phone it in like he did in Let’s Be Cops, shall we?).
The project has also added Cecily Strong in an unconfirmed role, joining her fellow SNL alum Kristin Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. And finally Matt Walsh has also been cast as a character called Rourke. Walsh is best known as hapless press aide Mike on HBO’s Veep but he’s been a stalwart of Hollywood comedies for years now in the likes of The Hangover, Role Models and Starsky & Hutch.
They all join the recently announced Chris Hemsworth who hilariously has been cast as the group’s “receptionist,” whatever that means!
The female-led reboot – which also stars Hollywood funny lady Melissa McCarthy and is currently shooting in Boston from a script by Katie Dippold (The Heat, Parks and Recreation) – has been teased by Feig on social media as of late, including him posting pics of the Ghostbusting suits the gals will be donning for their supernatural duty, as well as new weapons named Proton Packs.
The Ghostbusters reboot is set for a July 22nd, 2016 release.
