Neil Marshall has made a name for himself in the British film and TV industry over the last 15 years, having caught people’s attention with gory action-horror Dog Soldiers, making one of the best horrors ever with The Descent and going on to make some of the most shocking episodes of Game of Thrones (he’s also directed episodes of Black Sails and Constantine).
Now Newcastle-born director has targeted his next project, a furustistic revenge thriller entitled The Sentence. There are no exact plot details reported as yet but it’s been described as in the vein of classic revenge movie Death Wish; that kind of comparison always gives me pause but Marshall gets the benefit of that doubt in my eyes.
The script is written by Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, who worked together on the screenplays for Olympus Has Fallen, The Expendables 3 and upcoming Luc Besson co-written thriller Twice. Marshall will also produce the film alongside his Applebox Entertainment partner Marc Helwig.
Although I haven’t always loved Marshall’s work – I never got the big deal over Dog Soldiers and his Doomsday left a lot to be desired – The Descent is one of my all-time favourite horror movies and he has some amazing pedigree in his TV work. He has a gritty, bold sensibility that should work wonders for the type of revenge movie that The Sentence is described as.
Marshall most recently finished work on horror anthology Tales of Halloween, which also has segments directed by the likes Darren Lynn Bousman and Lucky McKee and is set for an October 16th release.
