If you were at all worried about the planned sequel to Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi film Blade Runner then you can rest assured that, at least visually, it’s in very safe hands indeed
Variety reports that cinematography maestro Roger Deakins has signed on to work his magic on the as-yet-untitled Blade Runner sequel (surely it’ll be more than just Blade Runner 2?), to be directed by Denis Villeneuve.
The duo previously worked together on the excellent thriller Prisoners, and Deakins is currently at the Cannes Film Festival for the film Sicario, starring Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin, where he will also receive the special Pierre Angénieux Excellens in Cinematography Award.
It’s no surprise Deakins has been nabbed for the Blade Runner followup; simply put he is perhaps the greatest living cinematographer working in the industry. His work includes everything from Coen bros. fare like Fargo and The Big Lebowski to The Shawshank Redemption and Skyfall to Westerns No Country for Old Men and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, with much more in between and beyond. He is a multi-Oscar nominee, with his most recent nomination being for Angelina Jolie’s wartime drama Unbroken.
Harrison Ford is set to reprise his role as Rick Deckard in this new Blade Runner film and last we heard Ryan Gosling was also in talks to star in an unspecified role. We don’t know anything about the specific plot as of yet but we do know it’s set several decades after the end of the 1982 film, based on an idea conjured by Scott and co-writer of the original, Hampton Fancher. The latter has co-written the new script alongside Michael Green.
Even if the plot, dialogue, action sequences etc. are not up to scratch, at least we can look forward to a visually beautiful sequel to a much-loved classic.
The Blade Runner sequel is set to start principal photography in summer 2016, with a release date TBA.
