For some it’s a ’90s action-thriller classic that should have never been touched, but whether you want it or not we’re getting a remake of Point Break and today we have the very first trailer for it.
The beloved 1991 movie was directed by Kathryn Bigelow and starred Keanu Reeves a spirited young FBI agent named Johnny Utah who goes undercover with a group of surfers-by-day, bank robbers-by-night, led by the charismatic Bodie, played by the late-great Patrick Swayze.
The new version appears to be a more elaborate, world-spanning take on the story, with relative unknown Luke Bracey (he was masked as Cobra Commander in the second G.I. Joe movie) playing Johnny, while Edgar Ramirez tries to fill Swayze’s considerable shoes as Bodhi. This time the story focuses on a federal agent who infiltrates extreme sports enthusiasts who also pull of daring and elaborate heists all over the world.

I dig how they’ve gone their own way with the new version, making it more of a globe-trotting crime actioner. However, I think the film is going to have some trouble finding an audience; those who know the original won’t want to see something that remakes something they love, and audiences too young to remember it will have other things to watch.
Alongside Bracey and Ramirez, Point Break also stars Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies), Ray Winstone and Delroy Lindo. It’s directed by Ericson Core (Invicible) and written by Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium, Total Recall remake). It’s set for release in the UK on January 8th, 2016.
